Yesterday just outside the margin of reeds around the small pond on the east
side of Central Park I flushed a COMMON SNIPE. From the reeds an invisible
bird called for a couple of minutes, I think possibly a virginia rail
judging from recordings 6 and 9 on the Xeno-Canto Americas web site. This
morning I heard it again. Has anyone else heard this critter? I would be
grateful if someone familiar with rail vocalizations could confirm or deny
this possibility. On the subject of Central Park, have there been any
sightings this winter of interesting geese?

This morning a female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK helped itself to sunflower seeds
at our feeder, upper Canyon Heights Dr.
