    Dear Birders:

This afternoon, while languishing on my daybed in the sunroom, a brilliant male Townsend's Warbler dropped down out of the live oak into my potted Meyer lemon inches from the window. I watched him as he plucked several white buds before flying back into the oak. I'm protective of these future lemons and usually would rap on the window, but I considered this visit a fair exchange -- a few possible lemons for the chance to view close at hand, this striking yellow and black beauty who brightens the grayest of winter days.

Lawrence Hall of Science has made a place on their website for some monthly natural history observations on the hill (Berkeley) and in Strawberry Canyon. One article will most likely be about birds. Check it out: www.lawrencehallofscience.org/about/stories. And send me you observations and ideas.

    Happy New Year!
