Tim Kingston and I wandered out along the eastern shore of Briones
Reservoir today, where we were rewarded with some good sightings. The best
was a male Hooded Merganser courting four females (this all in an inlet
about a mile down the road). Also saw a Red-shouldered Hawk flying with two
Red-tails, and then later right overhead two Red-tails aggressively chasing
each other and screeching. The oaks are putting out a bumper crop of acorns
this year, which attracted a number of busy Acorn Woodpeckers. Also saw a
hunting Blue Heron, numerous Great Egrets, and dozens of Pied-bill Grebes.
    What a beautiful fall day!
