    Dear Birders:

This morning on my regular walk out to the Lawrence Hall of Science Vista parking lot, I had my first glimpse of a single Golden-crowned Sparrow.? It flew from a dense Catalina cherry (where the first arrivals often come) across the trail to a fence, remaining there long enough in the low light for me to determine that it was a large sparrow with an upright posture.? It then dropped down into a garden issuing a characteristic single clear "Tseep"click" -- no heart-melting song in the minor key this time.? Perhaps this was a single individual passing through and a larger flock will arrive with the week.

September 22 paces it near the middle of dates I have recorded over the years with September 15 being the earlierst.
