I had barely thirty-five minutes to spare early this morning before
going to a restoration workday at the Alameda Wildlife Refuge and
used the time to survey the Emeryville Marina area where Jim
Chiropolas and Derek Heins found the redstart yesterday. I lucked out
and was able to locate the bird around 8:30, ten minutes before I had
    to depart.

The female redstart was foraging alternately in the alder and pine
trees in the area between the parking lot and the marina. I got great
looks for the ten minutes as the bird flitted about the trees,
fanning its tail in the classic redstart manner.

Directions: Go west on Powell from I-80. The road does not end at the
restaurant but curves to the right and enters a long parking lot
sandwiched between the bay and the marina. The first small building
on the right contains public restrooms. As you continue on the road,
with the parking lot on your left, there is another small building
with facilities for marina users only. Between these buildings, along
a paved path, is a line of alders. The bird was in one of the alders
    closest to the first building.

At the other end of the alders, shortly after arriving I saw one
Yellow Warbler and one Orange-crowned. These trees are often good
    migrant traps.

The American Redstart is a new Alameda County bird for me. Thanks
    Derek and Jim!
