The highlight of a bike ride with Jim Chiropolas today from Lake Merritt north to the Richmond Shoreline and then up to Skyline Blvd for the ride back home was a female American Redstart at the Emeryville Marina. It was in the trees on the marina side at the end of Powell Street. Also seen in that stand of trees was an Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow Warblers, and an Empidonax flycatcher. Other highlights of the 80 total species seen were six White Pelicans in Lake Merritt; 44 Black Turnstones; White-tailed Kite, Elegant Tern and Heermans's Gull at the Berkeley Marina; a Red-necked Phalarope puttering just off the shoreline west of the Richmond Costco; Yellow Warblers in a fennel patch near the Point Isabel dog park and a Green Heron at Lake Temescal. We also had a possible Cassin's Vireo at the Tilden Park Steam Train that was shrouded in a blanket of fog.
