Yesterday a group of friends birded with Marilyn Trabert and saw just over
the bridge on the right side a Downy woodpecker excavating a new hole in a
tree. This seemed unusual for this time of year. Has anyone else seen such
activity? We saw many juvenile birds typical of this time of year with a
spectacular view of a juvenile Red tail. Some spirited discussion resulted
in a draw re: RTH vs. Red Shouldered while consulting Sibley and Natl. Geo.
On returning home I looked at the photos in Kaufmann and there was no
question in my mind that indeed it was a RTH. Way to go Marilyn and Mike;)
Just goes to show a picture is worth a thousand words! I was particularly
argumentative; must have been from reading too much Phoebe Snetsinger.
