There's still unusually low diversity on our regular summer camp bird
routes, but a few notable species showed up. On the 21st, at the Albany
Waterfront, we found a single Ruddy Turnstone on the mudflats, and all
three cormorant species off of the bulb, with singles of Brandt's and
Pelagic just offshore. On the 22nd and 24th, we turned up a Great
Horned Owl for the first time since '07, in an area below Vollmer peak
that used to have a number of owls haunting it. On the 23rd, five Black
Turnstones were on the mud north of the Berkeley Meadows, and a lone
Allen's Hummingbird and a singing House Wren were in the brush north of
the turnaround at Cesar Chavez Park. For the first time since 2005, we
did not see a Brown Pelican lumber by during the week. Few birds catch
a child's attention more than a diving pelican.
