    Dear Birders:

I drove down to Russell Street at San Pablo Park around 6 pm last evening and found no signs of the bluebirds. The park, on the warm evening, was jumping with loud music coming from cars parked along the street. It seems even bluebirds have their limits and had moved on to a quieter place -- or I simply couldn't find them in all the hubbub. Still, knowing that bluebirds have found a home in our crowded city is heartwarming. Maybe Yellow Warblers will once again nest in the street trees as they did a hundred years ago (Joseph Grinnell). Now that's a blue and gold I could root for!

The Western Tanagers continue to sing in my neighborhood. Reading about nesting birds in other folk's yards makes me wonder -- Was six nesting boxes too many? My tally was one chickadee nest abandoned before egg laying. Oh well, there's always next year.
