Sorry this comes in so late. Just got subscribed to the list. Who knows, maybe it's still around.

I'd like to report the observation of a well-seen Black-throated Sparrow on Fairmont Ridge, Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Castro Valley CA, on 1 May 2009 at about 9:00 AM.? Seen without binoculars (didn't need 'em) from
about 10 meters away as it foraged leisurely in some coyote brush.? Weather: cloudy, light rain.

Watched it for at least 5 minutes.???Last seen flying toward another nearby clump of coyote brush. Looked for it again briefly in late morning on 5/2 but no luck.

Description:? Sparrow-sized. Plain light gray underparts; upperparts a plain, darker gray and uniform; chin, throat, and center of upper breast black, forming an upside down triangle; bold white eyeline; white "whisker".
    Unmistakeable!

Directions: From I580, take the Fairmont Dr. exit. Take Fairmont Dr. east over the hill to the Fairmont Staging Area parking lot on the left (North side of road; just before junction with Lake Chabot Road). Walk up the steep paved path 1/8 - 1/4 mile until the path levels out. Right where the path makes a slight dip, take an unmarked path to the right that leads about 100 meters to a small tree and bench overlooking Lake Chabot. The sparrow was seen in the coyote brush right in front of the bench.
