    Hi all,
My main point when I posted earlier about the possibility of Townsend's Warbler nesting in the East Bay and nesting so incredibly early, was to encourage an event like this to be documented. The names Judi and Steve are going to mean absolutely nothing to researchers now or in the future. All that will be left to base this extraordinary record on will be documentation or a lack thereof.
I completely understand that this simply isn't important to some people. Many, perhaps most, simply enjoy going out birding for the sake of birding and don't wish to document sightings such as these. I understand that. But if you are in the game, extraordinary claims merit extraordinary proof. If you tell me you saw a beagle walking down the street is would say, "that's nice." If you say you saw a Mountain Lion walking down the street I would say, "hmmmnm, that is unusual but are you sure it wasn't a bobcat or a Golden Retiever? Did you get a picture?" If you say you saw Yeti or a Stegosaurus you need to expect a great deal of skepticism. This isn't Yeti but it is more unlikely than a Mountain Lion. In scientific terms, this event essentially didn't happen.
I am not saying, and have been very careful not to say, that Judi was incorrect. As highly improbable as it is, she could have been right. Judi strongly believes in her sighting and that is as it should be. As the record stands now it won't be accepted and that too is how it should be.
All is well with the world (or at least most things),
    Steve
