In a seemingly strange choice, a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches has begun building a nest in an Alder tree in a park near my home. The 'sawdust' falls from the hole as they peck deeper.

Location is Alameda, Bay Farm Island, Shoreline Park, at the corner of Seaview Parkway and Brunswick Way.

When looking out from the intersection toward the shoreline, there are two alder trees, and the nest excavation is in the tree on the right about twenty feet up. They do not seem ar all bothered by humans.

I have read that the pair will drive other birds from the tree but as yet morning doves, chickadees, phoebes, and kinglets share the tree.
