    Dear Birders:

Earlier in the season, I put out six bird houses, including two store-bought ones, in various locations around the garden. I nailed up a shabby home-made one (definitely sub-standard housing) on a post between my upper and lower decks in the low-rent district of the garden. Now I discover that a chickadee pair has moved in. I think they are taking turns sitting on eggs. Though I have never been a 'landlord' before, the silence when parents come and leave suggests that nestlings have yet to hatch.

Here's the problem: This weekend my son and grandson arrive to partly demolish both decks to replace dry rot areas -- all this within inches of the nest box. Do I move the box a few yards away, hoping they'll find it? Or do I leave it where it is hoping they will ignore the chaos?

    Please advise.

    Thanks,
