    Yes! That's the duck I saw. I thought it looked more like the 
    Ring-necked Duck that was also in attendance, as the sides were more 
    gray than white, but it lacked the white spikes at the front of the side 
    patches. Consider the possibility of a Ring-necked/Lesser Scaup hybrid....
    
    I haven't been back in a day or so, but wouldn't be surprised to find it 
    still there - once a migratory duck figures out where the most food at 
    Lake Merritt is to be had, it tends to settle in, as witness the female 
    Redhead who's putting in her third or fourth year beside the nature center.
