I made a quick stop at New Marsh around noon today to check on the American bittern. The bird was preening and basking in the sunshine in the reeds along the southeast side of the pond. Every wing stretch brought the sound of shutter clicks as numerous photographers stationed around the pond with telephoto lenses trained on the bird tried to get the shot. A lot of people are enjoying this bird!

I braved the cold wind awhile longer to look for the other birds recently seen. I found a Virginia rail wading in and out of the reeds along the northeast side of the pond. A Say's phoebe was hawking for insects from a twig west of the pond.

On the lawn north of pond, along the westernmost path by the dirt field, I found five tiny cackling geese and two Ross's geese among the hundreds of Canada geese. Something startled the geese and the entire flock took off towards the lake with a great deal of honking and flapping and ado.
