[EBB Sightings] Pileated Woodpecker in Joaquin Miller - ALA

Hi birders,

At about 1 pm yesterday  (11/17/08) I heard a calling Pileated Woodpecker in 
a thickly wooded area near  the Sequoia Arena in Joaquin Miller Park in 
Oakland.  The bird called  continuously for 15-20 seconds as I raced around trying 
to pinpoint its location  -- then it went silent.  I played a recording and got 
no response.   (It was interesting to note how pathetic the recorded version 
-- with my cheap  little speaker -- sounded in comparison to the real thing!)  
I have visited  this area at least twenty times this year, hoping to add to 
PIWO to my big year  list.  I can now breathe a sigh of relief.
