Today (11/4) my birding class saw several Ring-necked Ducks (male & female)
on Alameda Creek downstream of the dam near Mission Blvd. in Fremont. The
easiest way to get see them is to drive to the intersection of 3rd St. & Chase
St. in Niles and enter the path along the creek. In the same area there were
11 Common Merganzers (1 adult male among them), 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 4 Greater
Yellowlegs, a flock of Cedar Waxwings, and other birds. We saw Green Herons
at Shinn Pond & Grau Pond, Eared Grebes at Shinn Pond & Quarry Lakes, and
Western & Clark's Grebes at Quarry Lakes. A Hermit Thrush was seen between Grau &
Shinn Ponds. These species were also seen yesterday when I scouted for the
trip. Yesterday there was also a Brown Pelican at Quarry Lakes.
