A very large family of Orioles has invaded my back yard. For most of the
Summer we entertained a gorgeous male Hooded Oriole and he just sort of stopped
visiting our hummy and oriole feeders. the visits became fewer and far
between. Suddenly the chattering becomes a chorus as the family shows up! We had
seen him with a female at one point, but now a mass invasion! three perhaps four
kids and mom. Eating grape jelly like mad but completely avoiding offered
oranges. The now enormous Mexican elderberry overburdened with berries gets
ravaged by them.the plums, too. The Rogers red native grape when it flourishes
stripped bare by them. It's all for you, friends!
I hate it when they go. Just hate it! My wife and hiding in a makeshift
blind in the back yard to get close looks, the intense chattering and
confusion, the mother feeding begging yet capable juveniles grape jelly they
themselves help themselves to when mom is looking the other way. Suddenly today
perhaps tomorrow the end of the weekend...... they will be gone as if a switch got
turned off. I hate the sudden quiet. And the anxiety of will they make it to
their winter grounds ok. what hazards are on the way. and with the
development madness of our State, is there even a winter grounds for them to fly too?
Please stay, we have money for all the jelly you could ever want!!!!
On a similar note all six hummy feeders are in full use. approaching a
gallon week. Selasphorus and Annas.
Swarms. ahhhhh...........
Occasional visits by Great Blue Heron as well, Egrets, stealing fish from
the back yard pond. we do what we can.
