    Yesterday there were dozens, maybe hundreds of willets at Hayward 
    Shoreline. There was one that looked different. Instead of the mottled 
    gray-on-gray normal for mating plumage, this bird had all dark gray on 
    its back. Much the same pattern as winter plumage, except the gray was 
    much darker. Sort of a charcoal gray.
    
    The head looked like a standard issue willet head, and when it flew it 
    had the characteristic knock your eyes out black & white wing pattern.
    
    About 3:30, in the Ora Loma marsh.
