This afternoon at about 2PM I was birding the Hayward Marsh ponds looking
for the Wilson?s Phalarope and was at first quite excited finding what I
thought was about 14 of them. However on closer inspection of my photos, I
began to wonder if most were Red necked in transition plumage. What seemed
to be the big tip-off were the dark markings on the underside of the wings
of 2 I caught in flight and the dark mask on the nonbreeding adults. In
looking closer the white throats at the top of the throat were possibly
misleading, because the Wilson?s have some of that too. What seemed to be
the only clear fact was redness on the front on the throat with dark behind
it. Fortunately I captured two of those.

Anyone else have similar observations / questions? Any transitional
    Phalarope gurus out there?
