Not a lot to report here for the month of July, so far. I was gone most of
June and might have missed something, but probably not. I have been seeing
the juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk, a continuing Pied-billed Grebe. One day I
had a Coot, another a 3-heron day (Green Heron, Snowy Egret and
Black-crowned Night-Heron), I had a Downy Woodpecker one day, and even had a
Double-crested Cormorant a couple of days back. This morning I had another
3-heron day, but they were all Green Herons, at least one of which was
juvenile. Pretty much every year I see a Caspian Tern hunting over the
large pond, but not yet this year. The last couple of weeks I have been
seeing a Queenfisher pretty regularly, but today we had a Kingfisher. I
have not seen the Cliff Swallows since before we left on June 5. The Barn
Swallows continue, along with the occasional Oak Titmouse, White-breasted
Nuthatch and Bushtits. Had Western Bluebirds once near Ygnacio Valley Road
along the south end of the new sports fields.
