So Alameda County is the unofficial epicenter of the
Great-horned Owl population boom of 2008. Claremont
Canyon, Murietta's Well, and now Coyote Hills.
I can add another Alameda County GREAT-HORNED OWL nest to the list. This
year I was thrilled to discover a GHOW nest on county property adjacent to the
Fairmont Hospital campus (in San Leandro), where I work. No so thrilled, I
assume, were my local Red-tailed Hawks, who I first found using that nest in
2002. Yesterday (5/8/08) I saw two young GHOWs on the nest. (The Red-tails
are still in the neighborhood, so I assume they built a new nest this year.)

    Good birding,
