    Mt. Diablo Audubon Society had a field trip to Mitchell Canyon today.
         We saw 54 species of birds, a number of butterflies,
    wildflowers, and a 3 and 1/2 foot rattlesnake. Highlight included:
    at least 75 American White Pelicans soaring high in the sky not far
    from White Canyon: Olive-sided Flycatcher; Western Wood-Peewee; very
    close-up looks at a Dusky Flycatcher; Townsend's Warbler; and Western
    Tanager.  We also saw
    several birds at nest holes or on the nest: Hairy Woodpecker;
    Ash-throated Flycatcher; Cassin's Vireo; Violet-green Swallow; and
    Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
