Earlier this afternoon while eating lunch on my girlfriend's balconey near the Cleveland steps, I spotted a hummingbird struggling to free it's beak from a small branch. Poor thing was dangling for quite a while trying to escape. It looked like it must have flown high speed into the branch and speared it, After a while it finally succeeded in righting itself. When I checked on it later it was perched on the same branch, opening and closing its beak, I guess trying to work out the kinks in its jaw muscles. That was a relief. We thought we'd be staring at the dangling corpse of the unfortunate thing for weeks. Now it's flown off, undoubtably a little more mindful of tree branches.
