[EBB Sightings] Could It Be a Smew? Strange Duck in Fremont....

One of my friends stumped me with a description of a strange brown and 
white duck with a dark blue bill and feet. I couldn't begin to guess 
what it was - none of the usual suspects seemed to fit - so I suggested 
he try searching online for something that worked. He says it's most 
like an immature Smew - not the amazing white and black suit, alas, but 
very like the female or immature forms.

We'd love to hear what an expert makes of it! It's been in the slough 
next to the bridge at Gateway Blvd  between  Bayside Parkway and 
Lakeview Blvd in Fremont California for the last week or so, visible in 
the afternoons. Map here:
