The following was seen at the shoreline today -

Cackling Goose - 3 on the Radio Tower Hills. March records only in 1999, 2000, 2007, and 2008.

Common Merganser - 1 female seen on the bay south of Hayward's Landing with some Canvasbacks.

Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 seen in Bockman Channel.

Caspian Tern - 2 seen flying over Ora Loma Marsh. Later they were seen and heard over Frank's Dump West. This is the second earliest record I have for the shoreline. The earliest was 3-4-07.

Swallows - the only ones seen today were Tree and Barn.

Lapland Longspur - 2 near the usual area on the Radio Tower Hills. To look for them, go west on a paved trail on the north side of the channel that goes under Winton Ave just before entering the EBRPD parking lot. Take this trail about 2/3 of the way towards the bay to where a while post is on the north side of the trail. Go to the right up the slope (not very far) and the longspurs were on the top. They were near where there is some sparse vegetation that is close to some bare ground. They are also molting into breeding plumage and rather colorful. They don't look much like they did in late Dec. and Jan.

    Good birding
