[EBB Sightings] Allen's hummingbird (and more) at Lake Elizabeth - Fremont

Mid-morning today (Tuesday) at Lake Elizabeth in
Fremont's Central Park, Hilary Powers and I had a
number of remarkable finds. Best bird: a bright orange
(green-backed) ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD in the wooded area
on the east side of the lake trail just north of tree
swallow box #15. A NORTHERN FLICKER and a FOX SPARROW
were in the same general area, along with an unseen
calling woodpecker. On a tree near New Marsh, the
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE allowed us a close-up view. TREE
SWALLOWS are actively checking out the real estate at
New Marsh, with couples perching on nest boxes and
peering inside. Part of the troop of CACKLING GEESE,
in this case one minima and three Aleutians, were
hanging out with their larger brethren on the lawn
north of New Marsh. The ferruginous hawk was not seen,
but a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was perched on a lightpost
at the softball field near the animal shelter.  We
also had two RED-TAILED HAWKS, one east of the golf
course and the other at the northeast end of Bird
Island. A female COMMON MERGANSER was lazing in the
shadowy water just offshore of that same end of the
island. More than a dozen BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS
were on the island along with two AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN resting on the southwest bank. Two RAVENS were
flying around and perching on the dirt mounds at the
construction site at the swimming lagoon.  (Crows are
common at the lake; ravens are not.) Add to the great
birding the wonderful, 73-degree weather, and it made
for a happy morning!
