There was an adult Golden Eagle hunting squirrels and
jack rabbits in the open field at Central & Willow in
an industrial area of Newark today at noon. I saw the
eagle perched on the ground as I was driving past the
open field. I stopped to watch it take off and make
three passes at different jack rabbits over a twenty
minute period. At one point, the eagle dove to the
ground, and the rabbit somersaulted in mid air, but
managed to escape. All of the attempts seemed half
hearted, and all three times the eagle landed and
remained on ground for a few minutes before circling
the field and taking another swipe at the opposite end
of the field at another rabbit. There are dozens of
ground squirrels that scattered at every pass around
    the field.
There was also a Say's Phoebe hunting from the
barbed wire fence in the area.
