Jonathan Wheatley reported a Summer Tanager in North Berkeley yesterday. It
was not seen today. He sent me some great photos of the bird, which I'm
happy to forward to anyone who wishes to see them.

    Bruce--

I saw a bright red bird in my yard in North Berkeley today. If you can see
    the
attached photos, let me know what you think it is. I was unsure between
    hepatic
or summer tanager -- in either case, they are supposed to be further south
    in
    winter.

He was eating insects, one looked like a wasp or bee. It was a very gloomy
    day,
so I had to turn the ASA up on the digital camera. Photos taken at Cedar and
    La
Loma in Berkeley, just north of the campus.

    happy birding,
    Jonathan
