One more thought...as long as you're willing to drive a little. Jewel Lake
in Tilden Park offers terrific birding. I think if I were going to take a
group of students out in your area, that's where I'd go. I'll bet you can
be there in 20 to 25 minutes.

This link has directions to the Tilden Nature Area which shares a parking
    lot with Jewel Lake.

    Hi Fred,
I'll let someone else answer part A, but I can make a couple of suggestions
for places to take students in your area. There are a couple of staging
areas for Briones Regional Park - one on Pleasant Hill Road in Lafayette,
across from Acalanes High School and one off Bear Creek Road which can be
reached from Lafayette via Happy Valley Road. Both would offer good
birding. I've spent more time at the Bear Creek staging area - there's
creek access and the trails are nice. You may encounter some friendly cows
    along the way.

Also, the Rim Trail around Lafayette Reservoir (generally less crowded than
the main trail) would be a good choice. Bring good hiking shoes - some
parts are quite steep. My cub scouts can handle it, so I'm sure your high
    school students can.
