    Hi E. B. Birders,

Bob Power has also inspired me to think about doing a
big year, but instead of Alameda County, I'm going
    cover Contra Costa County.

I was out of town for the 1st and 2nd of January, so I
started counting during this really rough weather
we've just had. So far, nothing unusual, but I'm up to
96 species..... and not one bird with the sun on its
    face!

Here are some highlights from today:

Black Oystercatcher - 7 on West Brothers Island,
    Richmond
Red Knot - 11 between Shimada Park and Meeker Slough,
    Richmond
Golden Eagle - 2 within 50 feet of each other on
Alhambra Valley Rd., about a mile west of Bear Creek
    Rd.
Merlin - 2 -a male at Miller Knox Reg. Park, Richmond,
and a female at Tennent Ave. and Orleans Dr., Pinole
American White Pelican - 1 over Richmond Parkway and
    San Pablo Ave. in Richmond.

I turned back right before I got to Meeker Slough this
morning when the really heavy rain and lightning
began. The Black Skimmer would have been a really nice
    bird to add!

Anyone else thinking of doing a big Contra Costa
    County Big year?

    All the Best Birding,
    Denise Wight
