    Dear Birders:

It doesn't seem to matter whether it was the deep cold of last week or
the endless rains, the robins have arrived to feast on the local crop
of cotoneaster berries. They give vocal vent to their excitement with
all nature of clucks, "perps," and even spontaneous bursts of their
spring arias. Their exuberance infects the local birds with a new
    liveliness.

This is an annual event, of course, nothing out of the ordinary, but it
never fails to lift the spirits.

The lengthening day, rather than robins, seems to be why juncos and
song sparrows have started to sing. Even my waterlogged garden is
responding to the extra half hour of daylight with new growth, and the
local acacias are shaking off winter, with a profusion of yellow
    flowers.
