[EBB Sightings] Extrordinary birds on the Hayward-Fremont CBC - 16 Dec.'07

Greetings EBB'ers,
 
The following birds listed are highlights of some species found on the  40th 
Hayward-Fremont Christmas Bird Count, Sunday, 16 December 2007.  We  now have 
a selection of 243 species of which the highest may be this year when  final 
scrutiny is finished. We tentatively saw/heard a total of 177  species.  
Individual numbers are always carefully tallied in the few weeks  following the 
Count Day (Feeder counts sometimes arrive later), however, we  do expect about 
130,000 (last year's). Forgive some bias to include  species more special to us 
than many others.  This CBC is centered at  the intersection of Hwy 680 (Nimitz 
Fwy) X Whipple Rd., Union City, ALA Co.,  CA.
 
Cackling ("Aleutian") Goose
Wood Duck
Eurasian Wigeon (3)
Hooded Merganser (4)
Red-throated Loon
Common Loon (Inland pond; Quarry Lakes Regional Park, Fremont/Union  City)
Osprey (3)
Ferruginous Hawk (Garin RP, Tolman Peak Trail)
Prairie Falcon (Shoreline; Mt. Trashmore,  Hayward Regional Shoreline, EBRPD)
Whimbrel
Phalarope sp. (probably Red Phalarope) (Salt pond, DESFBNWR, Fremont,  CA)
Western Gull X Glaucous-winged Gull (Salt pond; Eden landing Ecological  
Reserve, Hayward, ALA Co.)
Glaucous Gull (Lake & beach; Quarry Lakes RP, Union City)
Northern Pygmy-Owl (Palomares Cyn. Rd.; Castro Valley/Niles, Fremont)
Short-eared Owl (Twilight; "Alvarado" Channel, Union City).
Vaux's Swift (w/ 3 WTSw; New CBC species; Mission Adobe Nursery, Niles  
District, Fremont)
Northern ("Yellow-shafted") Flicker
TROPICAL KINGBIRD (West Winton Ave.-west end; Hayward) (Note: continues to  
be seen; 19 Dec.)
Barn Swallow (Morton Salt Pond, Central Ave, Newark) 
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (Coyote Hills RP; Quarry parking Lot, Fremont)
White-throated Sparrow (Delfino's C.V. yard; Definitive color  drawing!)
Lapland Longspur (Dirt field/slope; Frank's Dump, Hayward RS)
 
Needless to say,  the great weather (esp. lack of prior rain) gave all  a 
full access in a pleasant setting for the day.  Thanks to all  our volunteers, 
and those across the country.
