For those of you with EBMUD trail access passes, you may be interested in
having better directions to the location where Bob Brandriff found a
RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER on Sunday's Oakland CBC. At San Pablo Reservoir, take
the Oursan trail from the trailhead at the junction of San Pablo Dam Road
and Bear Creek Road. About a half mile in, the Oursan Trail intersects a
paved maintenance road coming down from Bear Creek Road. At that junction
there's a corral with a cattle chute on the right and riparian habitat on
the left. The Briones reservoir spillway is directly ahead. The Sapsucker
was working the trunks of the tall bare trees that rise up above the
willows. We observed it briefly and then it flew off to the west toward the
conifer stand. We were unable to relocate it, even with a tape.
