    On a brighter note, while I was looking for (and sadly
    finding) oiled birds at Don Edwards NWR in Newark this
    morning, I counted 60+ Bonaparte's gulls in the small
    muddy ponds on the northeast side of the Dumbarton
    Bridge (Newark end).  You can gain access to the levee
    trail beside the pond by going under the bridge from
    the fishing pier parking lot. The birds were not
    particularly flighty despite my nearness. 
    
    I took a hand-held digizoomed photo (not great, but
    you can tell what the bird is).
