The Tufted Duck was still at Lake Merritt yesterday at about 3:30 pm. I actually went there looking for him in the morning and didn't find him, checking the area between the nature center and the first island twice. Figuring that there were only about a gazillion ducks out there for him to hide in, I decided to try again in the afternoon. I checked the area by the nature center and didn't find him, and so walked all the way to the end of the lake checking every single duck out there. Finally I gave up and headed back to my car - there were three ducks left in the area by the nature center and one was the Tufted. I don't know if I just missed him the first three times or if he wasn't there until the third time. Great looks at him - he was less than 10 feet from me.

The Barrows Goldeneyes were also present and very easy to pick out.

I don't think I've ever been so close to Black-Crowned Night Herons in my life. Weird how they eat from the trash cans... My 4 year old loved it.
