[EBB Sightings] EBB Sightings -- Question about recording birds on an mp3

In "The Singing Life of Birds", Kroodsma gives information about recording
birds sounds with "ancient" minidisc technology (from way back in 2004-5:-).

Does anyone know how to do this with an mp3-player? Some players have
built-in mikes that would not be at all satisfactory; some have a jack for a
mike, but what is needed is an ability to monitor (with headphones) while
recording, so you know when the directional mike is aimed and picking up the
maximum sound. I don't know of any mp3-players that have this ability, so
this may need to happen before the signal gets to the mp3.
