In an earlier post, Stephanie Floyd mentioned a Northern
Flicker at Coyote Hills with deep yellow wing linings
and wondered if it is a yellow shafted.

I've photographed this bird at the same location at
least a couple of time in the last few weeks. I also
had noticed the yellow wing linings.

    I'm pretty sure it's a red x yellow intergrade.

There's a very large image of the bird online showing
quite a few of the details that point to an intergrade.
    It's at:

In this photo you can see that the malar is both black
    and red.

You can see a bit of the yellow-shafted's red nape, but
it doesn't appear to be quite as large or well-formed as
    a pure yellow-shafted would have.

Finally, you can see one of the edges of the secondaries
    that appears to be yellow.

From the entrance to the old quarry parking lot, walk
up the trail on the side of the hill -- the trail
that runs parallel to the main road to the visitors
center. The Flicker usually can be found in that area.

Also, the dark-morph Red Tail hangs out on the dead
snags on that hillside and can be found there early most
    mornings.

Pix of the dark-morph RT are at:
