I went in pursuit of the stilt sandpiper (yes, it looks like one to me) mid-morning this morning at Don Edwards NWR in Newark. Without a scope, I couldn't sort out a stilt sandpiper from the greater and lesser yellowlegs that were among the dowitchers and black-necked stilts in the first pond on the right after the entrance road. I walked out the trail into La Riviere Marsh and was honored by a direct fly-over of a magnificent PEREGRINE FALCON. The bird gave me a good looking over before circling its way up to higher elevation and disappearing in the east beyond the "W" hotel. Crowned sparrows and yellow-rumped warblers were busy in the trees by the boardwalk stairs. I also saw WESTERN MEADOWLARK, HOUSE WREN, and HERMIT THRUSH.
