On September 30 we observed our first Pine Siskin of the fall-winter season
when three appeared at our bird feeders. The flock has been increasing daily
and was up to about 20 individuals as observed today. In prior years the flock
has been in the range of 65 to 75 birds, possibly more. (They are difficult
to count when they are in the tops of the redwood trees.)

The Pine Siskins can be observed at our feeders and in the two tall redwood
trees next to the EBRPD fire trail behind our house located on Wilton Drive
near Burton in Oakland. Other species viewable from the trail include Pygmy
Nuthatches, the two species of towhees, sparrows, juncoes, finches and, after a
heavy rain, robins and Varied Thrush (if they return this year).

    Happy birding!
