    Dear Birders:

Today a House Wren came-a-calling making a brief interior inspection of
the homemade birdhouse I put up in a crabapple tree several years ago
which everything avian has completely ignored. First, I was surprised
that it was a House Wren and not our commoner, year-round Bewick's
Wren. This morning while gardening, strange wren-calls impelled me to
grab my binocs just in time to see the bird go into the birdhouse
    emerging almost immediately.

This visitation prompts two questions: From my ancient copy bought at
the old GGAS store on Bancroft Way of the "Annotated Field List of The
Birds of Northern California" by McCaskie and De Benedictus, I see that
a few House Wrens do over-winter. Any suggestions for a list newer
than 1966? Second question: As this is clearly not breeding season,
do birds use bird houses for occasional winter shelter?
