    I saw the first Eared Grebe of the year today, still in breeding 
    plumage, but altogether ratty. And the Kingfisher is back on the island, 
    now that the cormorant rookery is about out of business - though a 
    couple of birds still have youngsters in the nest.
    
    Pied-Billed Grebes are almost the most numerous birds in the water, far 
    exceeding the coots and giving the mallards a run for the title.
    
    Are the cormorants with young late breeders who lost out in the spring 
    land rush? Or multiple parents on their nth clutch of the season? Who 
    knows....
