This morning, I saw 3 male Phainopeplas in their usual spring hotspot at
Lime Ridge Open Space in Walnut Creek. To see them, start up the trail
from the end of Valley Vista Road (across from the Boundary Oaks Golf
Course clubhouse). At the first junction, bear left to continue on the
Ohlone Trail. The Phainopeplas' favorite spot is the trees on the left
just past the gate across the trail about 100 yards after the junction.
They range along the trail, above the golf driving range and police
firing range to the old quarry just beyond the trail that follows the
power line up the hill (Manzanita Trail). Also present at Lime Ridge
were a Say's Phoebe in grasslands at the top of the ridge and singing
Rufous-crowned Sparrow in chaparral in the Phainopepla zone.
