hey all we were out on Byron Hot Spring rd tonight around midnight 5/21-22 looking for scorpions and oh it was so beautiful listening to the distant do-doo songs, it was like a bunch of people were playing the same note on those school recorder flute things over and over. i dont know what type of owls they were but there were a few and all seemed to be in the same general area forward and off towards the airport when we were by the water tank past the first cattle guard. anyone have a clue what type of owl these could of been?
later on we headed over to Armstrong rd, down the road past where it turns left about half way to the end there were two owls sitting on the fence that im haveing difficulty IDing they seemed just slightly smaller than a barn owl, round faces/head, no horn tuffs, and had a gray on gray coloring with light colored under wings in flight. i was with in 7' of one with a light on it and it reminded me more of a great gray owl then a barn owl or short eared owl but the eyes seemed bigger then how the great gray look, the only thing im sure of is it wasnt a great horned unless young can fly/hover well and dont have horns.
any help with an ID would be wonderful
