Just wandered down to Lake Merritt to scope things out for the
4th-Wednesday GGAS trip, expecting to find the egret nesting season well
under way. But I didn't see a single egret, neither Great nor Snowy. Not
    one.

Lotsa leftover scaup and one lone lorn Canvasback, TWO Green Herons, and
a whole flotilla of Eared Grebes in breeding plumage. And the Cormorant
rookery in full swing. But no egrets.

Anyone know what's up with that?

The trip meets at 9 am this month, at the globe cage. Contrary to the
notice in the April Gull, parking in the boathouse lot is free during
the week - drive down Bellevue from Children's Fairyland, passing the
pay-to-enter kiosk (not staffed on weekdays), and the entrance to the
lot is on your right after you go most of the way round the park.
