This morning I walked up the Willow Trail from the entrance kiosk at Coyote Hills. At the blue & white post marked USDFM (2 manhole covers on the ground), I startled a Black Rail. It was a couple of feet from the path, about 6' ahead of me when it called out once. I was unsuccessful in locating it (pretty typical I understand), as I heard some rustling in the tall, dry reeds. This is my first confirmed encounter w/ a Black Rail; I've yet to see one tho'. I'm thrilled, since I've put this bird #1 on my 2007 target list.
