    On Caspian Tern dates

I saw 2 at Coyote Point (San Mateo Co) last weekend and asked Ron Thorn
about when they arrive back. I am not sure he was aware of the December
    sightings.

But these dates are interesting for this year:

Caspian Tern usually does not become obvious until mid-March, but there

are earlier arrivals. The earliest arrival, I have in my notebook is Feb. 4.
for northern California, and that date is very early. I have only ever had (
1 ) Caspian Tern in the month of February, and that was at the end of the
month. I usually do not record my first Caspian Tern of the spring until
mid-March. What is obvious is the numbers that are arriving early. [2007]

     Feb. 4 ( 1 ) San Francisco

     Feb. 19 ( 1 ) Santa Cruz

     Feb. 21 ( 2 ) Marin County

     Last week ( 1 ) in Oregon

March 2 ( 1 ) Pigeon Pt., San Mateo County

There was also the sighting from Monterey County over the weekend.

    Greetings Bob,

As usual this list from your observations is another one to be emulated; its
    great!

One point, however, you may not have heard that Pat Gordon found the
first-ever sighting of Caspian Tern for our Hayward-Fremont Christmas Bird
Count, Sunday, 17 December 2006. Her three CaTe's were along the shoreline
of Hayward's Eden Landing Ecological Reserve (Calif. State Fish & Game).
These birds should still be around, somewhere, and may have been the two you
saw on Sunday, 4 March 2007:
