    I heard the first twitterings of white throated swifts
    high overhead, as I was in my sunny Oakland backyard
    yesterday morning. Earlier, as I sat at my computer,
    flitting shadows on my living room rug alerted me to
    the presence of a flock of cedar waxwings in the
    liquidamber tree in front of my house; they scraped
    their beaks across the branches, and gave their
    high-pitched tseeees. Later, as I walked the Mountain
    Blvd. shopping district in Montclair, a red-shouldered
    hawk circled the streets, calling and flashing its
    translucent wing crescents; a crowd of crows cawed in
    counterpoint.
