This has been an unusual but interesting year at the feeders . The cold has made seed disappear quickly, and more birds seem to have gotten the word that the menu is good. In addition to the usual suspects, there have been 2 Varied Thrush feeding on the ground for the last week. They were very shy at first, but now move around the garden easily and openly. A flock of 60 Band-tailed Pidgeons descends almost daily in the last 10 days. Prior to that, at least 3-4 immature birds were coming in daily. A male Townsend's Warbler has been at the suet for the last 3 weeks, and is now eating hulled sunflower seeds. The Bewick's Wren who lives out in the court in front now comes into the back yard to feed. He is already in full song. Is this early? Yesterday, a flock of Robins and Cedar Waxwings descended on the toyons and just about cleaned off the last remaining berries. It's been quite a show.
