I decided to stop off at the UCB botanical garden for lunch today - and sure enough, the first bird I saw was a Varied Thrush. They seem to be thick in the North American/Central American section, where I had 5 of them. They weren't too shy, but seemed acutely aware of my presence.

I then sat under a very large, very sapsucker-riddled oak to see if the sapsucker would show up. No such luck, but I was rewarded with the best views I've ever had of Wrentit. I think there was a pair and a third bird as well. It was a great pleasure to watch one gleaning from a fuchsia as close as I could focus, and sometimes closer.

    good birding,
